Actionable strategies for supporting neurodivergent dancers' artistic, physical, and mental well-being.

Neurodivergency may be overrepresented and underreported in the dance population. The dance community must develop support strategies to make the study and work environments more neurodivergent-friendly. Recognizing the need for, and implementing strategies for, appropriate medical, nutritional, training, and mental support is critical to the health and productivity of neurodivergent dancers.

What is covered?

  • Neurodivergency 101: What are basic terms around neurodivergence? What are some common diagnoses?

  • Neurodivergency in dance: Why study ND in the dance world? What are the links between neurodivergency and common dance traits such as hypermobility?

  • Nutritional support: How might nutrition play a vital role in the physical and mental health of ND dancers?

  • Training needs: What are common areas ND dancers might need support in the studio? Does ND affect physical issues such as  proprioception?

  • Learning styles: How might a neurodivergent condition such as dyslexia affect a dancer?

  • Inclusive spaces: What can a company or studio do to make their space more inclusive for neurodivergent dancers?

  • Mental health: What sort of mental health support might benefit ND dancers?
